Former Google engineers unveil Cuil

On Sunday former Google engineers unveiled a new search engine, named Cuil.

From a Yahoo article:
Cuil Inc (pronounced "cool") is offering a new search service at that the company claims can index, faster and more cheaply, a far larger portion of the Web than Google, which boasts the largest online index.

The would-be Google rival says its service goes beyond prevailing search techniques that focus on Web links and audience traffic patterns and instead analyzes the context of each page and the concepts behind each user search request.

"Our significant breakthroughs in search technology have enabled us to index much more of the Internet, placing nearly the entire Web at the fingertips of every user," Tom Costello, Cuil co-founder and chief executive, said in a statement.

Cuil clusters the results of each Web search performed on the service into groups of related Web pages. It sorts these by categories and offers various organizing features to help identify topics and allow the user to quickly refine searches.

Cuil has indexed a whopping 120 billion Web pages, three times more than what they say Google now indexes, Patterson said, adding the company has spent just $5 million,

Google itself preemptively responded to Cuil's arrival with a blog post on Friday boasting of the growing scale of its own Web search operations.

It looks like Cuil may challenge Google search in the future. The search results pages of Cuil are different from ones that I am use to such as Google and Yahoo but I found it easy to use. I will definitely keep an eye on Cuil as it seems cool. :)

Google finally releases their 3D virtual world

On July 8th Google released their 3D virtual world called Lively. I downloaded, installed, and started it wondering what it would be like. I was thinking of comparing it to Second Life, the popular 3D virtual world, but it is nothing like SL right now. So back to Lively. I was able to choose my avatar from a few pre-created ones. I then went to a room where there were others in this virtual world. I could move the camera around but I couldn't move my avatar. So after a few minutes of trying different keys and nothing made my avatar move, I left the room. I then saw that I could create my very own room. So I picked an island from a list of pre-created rooms and I made it private so only I could make changes to it. Looking through the tool list of what I could do to the island, I didn't see much that I could do so I logged off. :)

To me it just seems like another way to chat and instant message your friends. This right now doesn't seem like something I will be using but maybe future releases will improve this virtual world to something like SL. Maybe I just have to play more with it.

If you gave Lively a try let me know how it went and what you were able to do in it.

Is the end of the world near?

A lot of people talk about the end of the world and some worry about it, others don't. Mostly it depends on your religion, when/how/why the end of the world will come. A post on AOL says that some think the apocalypse will take place in 2012, actually on December 21, 2012.

Ancient Mayan societies, known for their advanced mathematics and astronomy, followed a "long count" calendar that lasted 5,126 years. When their charts are translated to the Gregorian calendar, the international standard used today, time runs out on Dec. 21, 2012.

Believers say there are other links besides just the Mayan calendar that portend catastrophe. The sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky Way for the first time in about 26,000 years on the same day, which marks the winter solstice. Some say that will disrupt the energy flow to Earth, or that the high rate of sunspots or sun flares that NASA has predicted for 2012 could affect Earth magnetic fields.

What do I think you may wonder? Well I don't believe the above story, but I do think global warming is a reality and that is a big factor in the survival of Earth. I am somewhat scared about the future and the future my children may live in (I don't have any children yet).

Fake domain name renewal company

I found a web hosting blog post about a so-called domain company named "Domain Registry of America" that is sending out mail notices to people telling them that they need to renew their domain name through them, even though the person did not buy the domain name from them. Well they are a fake domain name company and do not send them any money if you received a letter from them. I know that I have received a letter from them in the past about my domain name and I ripped it up and threw it out as I have my domain name registered through, so I knew something was weird about that letter. I hope this post helps people recognize this scam and not fall for it.

And happy 4th of July everyone!
