Project Blue Mars 3-D virtual world

I was searching virtual worlds on Google and came across a blog post about a possible Second Life killer named Project Blue Mars. A snippet from the blog post about Project Blue Mars:

The game plan is to build a world based on the idea of a terraformed Mars in the year 2177. OK a sci-fi conceptual world sounds neat. But its the tech underneath thats important.

First they are licensing the CryEngine2 gaming engine, used in the most advanced game out right now Crysis. Next you make a deal with e-frontier (now a division of Smith Micro) makers of Poser and Shade, and creators of a huge library of 3D objects that can be imported into the game, including realistic people avatars and residential houses, furniture, etc. Finally, you license 3D Game Studio, a gaming development platform that can create dozens of activities for players to participate in (notice the golf course in the screenshot above). This is the basic building blocks to a successful 3D Virtual World that potentially could blow all the competition away.

The company web site that is working on Project Blue Mars is Avatar Reality. Some information about Project Blue Mars from Avatar Reality:

Blue Mars is a new online massively multiplayer virtual world (MMVW), featuring stunning graphics, realistic characters and endless social bonding opportunities. Set on Terraformed Mars in the year 2177 AD, players will be able to live out their fantasies through personalized avatars. Blue Mars is scheduled for beta release at the end of 2008.

Check out how real looking the below image is from Project Blue Mars. Go to the Avatar Reality site to view a larger version and a lot more cool screenshots of the virtual world.

You ask about the in-game content, will it be like Second Life where users can create their own content? The answer is no.

Unlike Second Life, most of the world's content won't be created by users; instead, they'll license third-party developers, with whom they'll share revenue from virtual item sales, while also protecting the company from DMCA/content theft complaints (a recurring headache in SL.)

Mercenaries 2 multiplayer video

I just watched a video showing multiplayer play in the new Mercenaries 2: World in Flames game and it looks awesome. I don't know if there will be split screen for this game but that would be awesome to include for this game. Watch the video below.

New Spider-Man game trailer

Yup you guessed it, another game post as I'm finding some cool videos of upcoming video games from the G4 web site. If you're a Marvel fan or a Spider-Man fan or a Wolverine fan as I am, then this game will get you very exicted. Spider-Man: Web of Shadows is due out this November 21st for the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Nintendo Wii, DS, and PC platforms. Watch the awesome game trailer below. You'll notice in the trailer that X-Men's Wolverine is in the game.

Watching the video it shows that the symbiote that once took over Spider-Man, and then Venom is trying to take over New York City. You fight as Spider-Man to stop it and you can switch between the black suit and his red suit. I don't know how Wolverine fits into this but I'm wondering if he'll be a playable character or not. This looks like a really cool game and I'm excited about it coming out.

See two more videos and some screenshots on the official Spider-Man: Web of Shadows site.

Update at 10:32pm
I searched around online and found an interview that IGN had with Chris Scholz, the studio head at Shaba, and Graham Fuchs, the senior executive producer on the game. Below are some insights to the game. Read the whole interview on IGN.

IGN AU: So does that mean that some missions will be open to you and some won't based on where on the metre you are?

Chris Scholz: It's more about who's fighting with you in the missions, or how the city's reacting to you. And then ultimately it does end up [influencing] who's there in the final battle, by your side.

IGN AU: Right. You've got to feel like a superhero -- that's the whole point! You mentioned upgrading Spider-Man before -- take us through that. How much will we be able to create the Spider-Man we want to play as?

Chris Scholz: Okay, so you have the red suit and the black suit, and they're both upgraded differently. For the black suit you have more strength-type abilities -- you can pick up cars and throw them, the red suit is more agility and web-based, so you have a bunch of upgrades for all the different types of web moves you can do. There are six channels that you upgrade, and there's a whole variety of different moves, and you use the experience that you gain from beating people to really customise the character how you want.

Left 4 Dead trailer

Below is a gameplay trailer video of the upcoming zombie action game Left 4 Dead by Valve. This game looks promising and looks to be a lot of fun. Playing this game with multiple people (online or multiplayer) seems like it would be a really fun time if you're into these types of games.
