Well I hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving holiday as I sure did with the family. Here's a funny hockey commercial that is really a commercial advertising the phone but you wouldn't know that watching it lol. Watch it below and let me know what you thought of it. I didn't expect what happened in the video to actually happen.

New Aliens vs Predator game

I'm a fan of the Predator, Aliens, and Aliens vs Predator movies, so it was cool to see the previews of a new Aliens vs Predator video game. The Aliens vs Predator game is being released in February 2010 for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3. The game looks good and a lot of fun. Watch the two trailers of the video game below and info about the game below as well.

Amazing hockey goal by youngster

I am a big hockey fan and found this video from a Puck Daddy blog post. You have got to watch the video on Bruins.NHL.tv of this goal by a young kid. Wow what an amazing goal. I never really tried to do that move when I use to play street hockey but looks hard to pull off. I remember seeing a video clip of Sydney Crosby picking up the puck with his stick like that kid does in the video and then stuffing it into the net when he was at the side of the net. I wonder if someone will try this move at the NHL All-Star game skills competition, like the past two seasons they have had that competition where players can try all kinds of tricks to score a goal.

Google launches Sidewiki

Yesterday Google released Google Sidewiki, which allows anyone with a Google account to post information or comments on a web site which would appear on the sidebar of your browser. I'm not sure if this is a good idea or not yet. First thing I thought of is people abusing this to advertise stuff or just posting nonsense. Google and users can rank the comments posted so that should help that concern. We'll see what happens with this, as I think some companies don't want this on their site. To use Google Sidewiki you need to have Google Toolbar installed, and this only works in IE and Firefox right now.

From Google's blog post yesterday:
Today, we're launching Google Sidewiki, which allows you to contribute helpful information next to any webpage. Google Sidewiki appears as a browser sidebar, where you can read and write entries along the side of the page.

In developing Sidewiki, we wanted to make sure that you'll see the most relevant entries first. We worked hard from the beginning to figure out which ones should appear on top and how to best order them. So instead of displaying the most recent entries first, we rank Sidewiki entries using an algorithm that promotes the most useful, high-quality entries. It takes into account feedback from you and other users, previous entries made by the same author and many other signals we developed.

HTML email trouble in Gmail and Hotmail

This past week I tried to help in why an HTML email was displaying differently in Gmail and MSN/Hotmail than in Microsoft Outlook and Yahoo. Mainly it was a CSS background image that wasn't displaying in the browser for Gmail and Hotmail. I haven't seen this before as I never send HTML emails so this was a first for me. After some searching online about this issue, I found this eROI resource post listing issues that Gmail and Hotmail don't do in HTML emails, like CSS backgrounds. Make sure to check it out if you send HTML emails.

Best basketball dunk ever

I found this video on Yahoo! and had to post about it as it's probably the best basketball dunk ever caught on video. This is just amazing, watch it below. The guy's name is Guy Dupuy and he is the amateur dunk champ. He performed the below dunk at London's Nike Midnight Madness over the weekend.

Disqus comments for Joomla extension

So today I've been busy trying to update my adamwlad.com site, but I haven't done much as things just come up out of no where it seems. I first updated the site to the latest version of Joomla (as of today 1.5.14), as I use the Joomla CMS for that site. Then I found the Disqus Comment System for Joomla! by JoomlaWorks Plugin so I downloaded it. I was very excited about this plugin because Disqus seems to be the best commenting system out there right now for sites. So after downloading it, I looked for installation instructions and could not find any. I found my way through Joomla and was able to install it and made sure it worked after some time playing around with it.

So since I couldn't find installation instructions I thought I would make some since I was able to install it. It's really not that hard to install. Here's what you do to install and enable the Disqus Comment System for Joomla! by JoomlaWorks Plugin for your Joomla site:
  1. If you don't have an account with Disqus, then create one and add your web site to the account
  2. First download the extension, you can find the link on the home page of Joomla Works. You have to scroll down the page until you see "Disqus Comments for Joomla!"
  3. After downloading the ZIP file, go to the Administrator area of your Joomla site
  4. Hover on the "Extensions" tab and click "Install/Uninstall"
  5. Under "Upload Package File", click the "Browse" button and find the ZIP file you downloaded, then click the upload button
  6. It's now installed but we need to enable it, so again hover on the "Extensions" tab, click "Plugin Manager" and find the plugin named "Disqus Comment System for Joomla! (by JoomlaWorks)" and click it
  7. On the left side, click the radio button to enable the plugin. On the right site, in the "Your Disqus subdomain" field, add the "Site Shortname" you gave to your site when setting it up on Disqus.com
  8. Also on the right side you can choose which pages you want to have Disqus comments appear on and if you want to show the comment count on the page
  9. You're now done and you can click "Save"
  10. Go to your site and check it out. You can modify how the Disqus comments look but you'll have to do it on the Disqus.com site.

I hope this mini-tutorial helps anyone who has had trouble installing the Disqus comments Joomla extension on their site. If you have any questions or comments feel free to leave a comment here.

Movie blogging: District 9

I saw the movie District 9 a few weeks ago but haven't had time to blog about it until now. I enjoyed District 9 even though I expected a lot of action scenes from what the previews had or what I assumed the usual action movie would be, but this movie brings a lot more than action. Most of the action is at the end of the movie, but it's a good interesting movie. I recommend this movie for others to see but not for kids as there are some graphic blood scenes.

If you saw the movie leave a comment and let me know your thoughts about it.

Displaying a RSS feed on your site

So I was looking for a way to display a RSS feed on a web site using JavaScript and HTML and I found this old blog post on Ajax.PHPMagazine.net. This worked perfectly except for one issue, which was caused by web browsers, basically the security of the browser was blocking external domain name RSS feeds to be pulled, so you need to do what Matt posted in the comments part, and it should work fine. I hope this article helps others as it helped me with something I was trying to do.

Commenting systems for your site

Well I was looking around different blogs and noticed some are using different commenting systems which I wasn't aware about. LOL @ myself because I have been building a web site and basically coding a comment system for the site, but now I find myself wanting to try one of these commenting systems out there. The only thing is I don't know which is best to use. I will list the ones I have found and I wanted to ask if anyone uses these what is good about them and what is not so good. If anyone has found other commenting systems please reply with a comment and let me know about it.

All of the above have free versions to use which is cool. Right now I have a client's site using JS-Kit ECHO (because that was the first one I found) for comments so I will see how that works.

Abbreviations for chatting online

I read an article on The Wall Street Journal web site titled "Quick! Tell Us What KUTGW Means" and after reading through it I did not know most of the abbreviations they listed in the article. I don't text much but I do use abbreviations for things when texting or playing online games. Here's a list of some of the basic ones I know that may help others if they don't know them.

afk = away from keyboard
brb = be right back
imo = in my opinion
lmao = laughing my ass off
lol = laughing out loud
nsfw = not safe for work
omg = oh my god
rofl = rolling on the floor laughing
ttyl = talk to you later
ty = thank you
yw = you're welcome

The Wall Street Journal article also gives links to a few sites that you look up to see what some abbreviations mean, such as NetLingo.com and UrbanDictionary.com.

New movie Zombieland trailer

That's right, another zombie moving is coming out, this one is called Zombieland. It comes out in October and watching the trailer it looks like it's somewhat of a comedy, almost like Shaun of the Dead. From the trailer it doesn't look like a really great movie, but I still want to see it as it's a zombie movie and I'm a fan of zombie movies and video games.

New movie Pandorum trailer

I saw this trailer on YouTube for an upcoming movie called Pandorum and it looks interesting to me so I thought I would post it on here. The movie looks to be an action/horror film set in space, watch the trailer below. Here's a description of the movie from the YouTube video description:

From the producers of the Resident Evil film franchise comes Pandorum, a terrifying thriller in which two crew members wake up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they've been asleep, or what their mission is. The two soon discover they're actually not alone -- and the reality of their situation is more horrifying than they could have imagined.

Random side note: this is my 300th post on this blog. Woot! :)

New movie District 9 trailers

Today I saw previews on television for the new District 9 movie coming out this summer and it got me saying "I want to see this movie." From the previews it seems to be about insect-looking like aliens being forced to stay in a certain area on Earth, closed off from humans. Then one day something happens and all hell breaks loose. I've included a better movie description below which was from the YouTube video I included below. The movie looks like an action sci-fi type of movie with no big stars that I could tell from the previews. Watch the trailer below.

District 9 trailer, movie description:

28 years ago, aliens made first contact with Earth. Humans waited for the hostile attack, or the giant advances in technology. Neither came. Instead, the aliens were refugees, the last survivors of their home world. The creatures were set up in a makeshift home in South Africas District 9 as the worlds nations argued over what to do with them. Now, patience over the alien situation has run out. Control over the aliens has been contracted out to Multi-National United, a private company uninterested in the aliens welfare they will receive tremendous profits if they can make the aliens awesome weaponry work. So far, they have failed; activation of the weaponry requires alien DNA. The tension between the aliens and the humans comes to a head when an MNU field operative, Wikus van der Merwe, contracts a mysterious virus that begins changing his DNA. Wikus quickly becomes the most hunted man in the world, as well as the most valuable he is the key to unlocking the secrets of alien technology. Ostracized and friendless, there is only one place left for him to hide: District 9.

Movie blogging: The Hangover

My wife and I went out with her sister and cousin to see The Hangover and we all had a good time. I wasn't sure what to expect after seeing the previews for it but it seemed like it would be a funny movie and it sure was. I suggest going with friends to see it as you'll be laughing throughout the movie. It is an adult kind of film and not suitable for any youngsters.

Here's one of the trailers for the movie if you haven't seen the previews yet.

2012, a new end of the world movie

There have been many movies where they had "end of the world" scenarios and some were good and others were bad. There is a new one coming out in November named 2012. There is a page on Yahoo that goes into details about the whole 2012 thing which I'm not going to take time and explain here. I included the trailer below and the effects look really good, check it out.

Movie blogging: Land of the Lost

Last Sunday my wife and I went to go see the Land of the Lost movie. We both watched the old Land of the Lost television show as youngsters so we both wanted to see this movie. Plus Will Ferrell is in it and we both like his other movies and days at Saturday Night Live. The movie did start out slow but it picked up and we both enjoyed it. I recommend seeing it if you were a fan of the show and/or like comedy with Ferrell. The parts with the T-Rex are probably some of the funniest parts in the movie. I looked on YouTube and there are some videos uploaded by users with the old and the older Land of the Lost television episodes, so if you want to see those shows check out YouTube.

Movie blogging: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

I recently saw the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie, which I previously blogged about before with this video trailer, and have to say that I liked it but I think I was expecting more but it was still good. I grew up watching the X-Men cartoon that was on Saturday mornings and Wolverine became my favorite X-Men as he is to many other X-Men fans as well. During the movie, I enjoyed the action scenes and the story was pretty good. The only part that I thought was weird is that they made Wolverine and Sabretooth half-brothers in the movie, but I don't think they were in the comic book (let me know if I'm wrong as I haven't read that many X-Men or Wolverine comic books). Also after watching the movie, I searched online about this, and I didn't know that Wolverine was born with retractable bone claws which the movie shows a very young Wolverine who uses his claws for the first time. I thought he got the claws in the Weapon X program but I was wrong. After the Weapon X program his claws become more dangerous as his whole skeleton was bonded to the indestructible element adamantium. You can read the bio of Wolverine on this Marvel Wolverine page. I wonder if they'll be making a second Wolverine movie as at the very end they show Wolverine in a Japanese restaurant or bar having a drink. I recommend seeing this movie, especially if you like the X-Men and even if you like a good action movie check this one out.

If you've seen the X-Men Origins: Wolverine movie let me know what you thought about it.

Prototype game looks like a lot of action

I watched a few videos on GameSpot.com about the new game Prototype that has been released and it looks like a lot of action. The game is mature as it has lots of violence, blood, and language not suitable for kids. Anyone that is into action games with a story line will probably want to get this one. Check out the two videos I included below, as they give you a pretty good sense as to what the game and story is about. Warning that the videos contain violence. If you bought the game already and have played it let us know how good the story and gameplay are in the game.

G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra trailer

Another movie I'm excited about coming out later this year (August 7th to be exact) is G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra. I posted a trailer I found on YouTube before, and I found another trailer with more previews from the movie. This movie looks good as well and with lots of action.

Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen trailer

Here's another trailer of the new Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen movie that will be coming out in theaters later this month. It looks good and I'm hoping to see it in theaters if we have time. If you haven't seen the first trailer check it out.

My round 3 NHL playoff predictions

I was 2 for 4 in my round 2 NHL playoff predictions and now it's time for my round 3 NHL playoff predictions. I personally don't like any of the teams left in the playoffs, but the one team I am rooting for to win it all is the Chicago Blackhawks. Here are the matchups:

Eastern Conference

(4) Pittsburgh Penguins vs (6) Carolina Hurricanes

Western Conference

(2) Detroit Red Wings vs (4) Chicago Blackhawks

My Picks

Pittsburgh Penguins vs Carolina Hurricanes - My pick for winner of this series is the Pittsburgh Penguins. This was a hard choice as Hurricanes' goalie Cam Ward is playing out of his mind right now and hasn't lossed in the playoffs yet in his career. So I think anything can happen in this series. Will Carolina be able to stop the Pittsburgh big guns? We will find out.

Detroit Red Wings vs Chicago Blackhawks - My pick for winner of this series is the Detroit Red Wings. This was a hard choice too as I want the Blackhawks to win this series, but looking at Detroit and how they're playing you just think that they can't be beat in the playoffs.

Let me know your picks for round 3 of the NHL playoffs.

Is the milk you drink safe?

After reading two blog posts on the being mama daily blog, I am questioning just how safe the milk is that we drink. Please read these two posts on the being mama daily blog, BMD Examines: America's Milk and Does Your Milk's Label Say This...........? Both are good reads and bring up some good points. If you read it let me know what you think, leave a comment. For me, this is scary, and I think I'll be looking for milk that is labeled "NO rBGH" for now on when grocery shopping.

My round 2 NHL playoff predictions

Wow, I was way off on some of my predictions of the first round of the NHL playoffs. With the round 2 matchups set, I came up with some predictions of mine. Here are the matchups:

Eastern Conference

(1) Boston Bruins vs (6) Carolina Hurricanes

(2) Washington Capitals vs (4) Pittsburgh Penguins

Western Conference

(2) Detroit Red Wings vs (8) Anaheim Ducks

(3) Vancouver Canucks vs (4) Chicago Blackhawks

My Picks

Boston Bruins vs Carolina Hurricanes - My pick for winner of this series is the Boston Bruins. The Bruins are playing great right now and hopefully the long time off doesn't negatively affect their playing. The Hurricanes have been hot ever since the trade deadline, and Eric Cole in the past has owned the Bruins. The Bruins must shut him down along with Eric Staal of course. Cam Ward is also playing good once again in the playoffs.

Washington Capitals vs Pittsburgh Penguins - My pick for winner of this series is tough to choose, but I'm picking the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Penguins have more offensive punch with Crosby and Malkin, but I wonder how rookie goalie Simeon Varlamov will fair against them. We'll find out if he can do as well against them as he did against the low-offense Rangers.

Detroit Red Wings vs Anaheim Ducks - My pick for winner of this series is another tough one, but I'm going to go with the Anaheim Ducks with another upset. Jonas Hiller is just playing amazing right now and the Ducks defense looks good. Should be a tough battle with these two teams.

Vancouver Canucks vs Chicago Blackhawks - My pick for winner of this series is the Chicago Blackhawks. The Blackhawks young team showed a lot in beating the Calgary Flames and I think they can beat the Canucks. Khabibulin will have to be great and Toews will have to continue his solid play. But beating Roberto Luongo four games will be tough.

Let me know your picks for round 2 of the NHL playoffs.

Swine flu questions and answers

An AP article on Yahoo! had some swine flu questions and answers. I just heard about the swine flu yesterday so this was an interesting read. Also check out 2 swine flus in Kan., US total 11; 8 likely in NYC.

Q. What is swine flu?

A. Swine flu is a respiratory illness in pigs caused by a virus. The swine flu virus routinely causes outbreaks in pigs but doesn't usually kill many of them.

Q. Can people get swine flu?

A. Swine flu viruses don't usually infect humans. There have been occasional cases, usually among people who've had direct contact with infected pigs, such as farm workers. "We've seen swine influenza in humans over the past several years, and in most cases, it's come from direct pig contact. This seems to be different," said Dr. Arnold Monto, a flu expert with the University of Michigan.

Q. Can it spread among humans?

A. There have been cases of the virus spreading from human to human, probably in the same way as seasonal flu, through coughing and sneezing by infected people.

Q. What are the symptoms of swine flu?

A. The symptoms are similar to those of regular flu — fever, cough, fatigue, lack of appetite.

Q. Are there drugs to treat swine flu in humans?

A. There are four different drugs approved in the U.S. to treat the flu, but the new virus has shown resistance to the two oldest. The CDC recommends the use of the flu drugs Tamiflu and Relenza.

Another X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged game trailer

I posted about the X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged game trailer earlier, and now there is another trailer out, but this time focusing on Wolverine fighting with Gambit. The trailer also shows Wolverine fighting against sentinals. The graphics and gameplay look good. I hope to someday play this game, but first need to buy an X-box 360. :) But not sure when I will be able to due to tough times with money. Watch the trailer below.

My NHL playoff predictions

It's that time of the hockey season, playoff time, the best time in my opinion. I'm listing my predictions below of who will win in the first round of the playoffs. I'm no expert by any means, as last year I was awful in my predictions lol. Let me know who you think will win in the first round playoff series. Here are the matchups:

Eastern Conference

(8) Montreal Canadiens vs (1) Boston Bruins

(7) New York Rangers vs (2) Washington Capitals

(6) Carolina Hurricanes vs (3) New Jersey Devils

(5) Philadelphia Flyers vs (4) Pittsburgh Penguins

Western Conference

(8) Anaheim Ducks vs (1) San Jose Sharks

(7) Columbus Blue Jackets vs (2) Detroit Red Wings

(6) St. Louis Blues vs (3) Vancouver Canucks

(5) Calgary Flames vs (4) Chicago Blackhawks

My Picks

Montreal Canadiens vs Boston Bruins - My pick for winner in this series is the Boston Bruins. I say in six games. I'm so looking forward to this rivalry in the playoffs again. Anyone who saw their last game knows just how heated things can get. Milan Lucic and Mike Komisarek may have the best rivalry in hockey right now.

New York Rangers vs Washington Capitals - My pick for winner in this series is the New York Rangers. This was a hard pick because the Capitals have the offense to do serious damage, but I don't trust goalie Jose Theodore to lead them past a series and I'm not sure about their defense. With the Rangers their offense at times shows up and other times doesn't. But having Henrik Lundqvist, I think he will win them this series. Rangers also have more grittiness and toughness, especially with the Capitals being without tough guy Donald Brashear.

Carolina Hurricanes vs New Jersey Devils - My pick for winner in this series is the New Jersey Devils. All I can say is Martin Brodeur, as he will carry them through this series. But that's nothing new right? :)

Philadelphia Flyers vs Pittsburgh Penguins - My pick for winner in this series is the Pittsburgh Penguins. Flyers just take too many penalties. Martin Biron at times can be shaky. This should be a tough heated series as well.

Anaheim Ducks vs San Jose Sharks - My pick for winner in this series is the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks offense will just be too much for the Ducks. But I could see a possible upset here with the Ducks as they got the playoff experience needed.

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Detroit Red Wings - My pick for winner in this series is the Columbus Blue Jackets. Yup the biggest upset of the playoffs right here. Blue Jackets with rookie goalie Steve Mason and R.J. Umberger who seems to get hot in the playoffs I think can pull off this upset.

St. Louis Blues vs Vancouver Canucks - My pick for winner in this series is the Vancouver Canucks. Canucks have Roberto Luongo and they'll go as far as he can take them. Hopefully the Canucks can help with some offense for Luongo though.

Calgary Flames vs Chicago Blackhawks - My pick for winner in this series is the Calgary Flames. Blackhawks have a young team, but they do have goalie Nikolai Khabibulin who has been there before. But I think the grittiness of the Flames with leaders Jarome Iginla and Dion Phaneuf, and the play of Mikka Kiprusoff will carry them past this round.

If you disagree with my picks, let me know and tell me your predictions.

Test if you have Conficker on your PC

On Yahoo's Tech blog they posted about a way to test and see if your PC has been infected by the Conficker worm. It's as simple as clicking a link and viewing a page making sure you can see at least the three images. Everyone should probably test just in case.

Funny but classless video

I saw this video on Yahoo! and had to post it because the dance the guy does is funny. But it is wrong and classless in my opinion to dance like that just after you beat someone after the event. He even dances in front of the guy he just beat, I was surprised the guy didn't punch him out or something. You wouldn't see that crap in hockey, because you would know that you're next time on the ice you would have guys coming after you.

Who said white guys can't dance? LOL, just joking, you know he is trying but he doesn't have it.  :)

Watch out for Conficker

Apparently there is a nasty worm named Conficker and it is supposed to be released today. Make sure to update your computer with latest virus protection updates and Windows updates.

Conficker is scheduled to go "live" on April 1, but whoever's controlling it could choose not to wreak havoc but instead do absolutely nothing, waiting for a time when there's less heat. They can do this because the way Conficker is designed is extremely clever: Rather than containing a list of specific, static instructions, Conficker reaches out to the web to receive updated marching orders via a huge list of websites it creates. Conficker.C -- the latest bad boy -- will start checking 50,000 different semi-randomly-generated sites a day looking for instructions, so there's no way to shut down all of them. If just one of those sites goes live with legitimate instructions, Conficker keeps on trucking.

Cool tool to analyze other sites

Here's a cool tool for web developers to see what other web sites use to make their sites go. The tool I'm talking about is Sitonomy.com. You can type in a site URL and then find information about that site, such as what server software, site stat tracking software, programming languages, ad networks they use for the site, and more.

Sitonomy is a free service that allows developers and designers to find out which technologies are used in a specific blog/site. Together with the provided statistic information of popular technologies, this service makes it easier to decide what technologies are suitable to your own site. List of top alternatives are provided for the following categories: affiliate networks, advertising networks, analytical tools and more.

New city simulation game looks good

There's a new city simulation game coming out this year called Cities XL and it looks really good if you're into the city building type of games like Sim City. Below is a basic summary of the game and below that is a video showing some of the nice ideas and graphics in the game.

To catch you up, here's a quick recap: Cities XL will basically offer an offline experience right out of the box and a continuing online experience should you want to pursue the dream of being the world's most successful architect. Like in many other city-building games, such as the SimCity series, the out-of-box, offline game in Cities XL will let you use editing tools to build up the virtual city of your dreams, using powerful tools that will include some 500 different buildings, so you can click, drag, copy-paste, and brush-paint tiny individual houses or sprawling roadway networks, then maintain your population's happiness and income while using your funds to build a bigger, better, happier city.

Alan Wake game

I just watched two trailers to a video game called "Alan Wake" and it looks interesting and looks good. It seems to be about a horror writer, who writes about his dreams and then they start happening. Looking at some of the comments for the trailer, it seems this game has been in-the-making for some time and still hasn't been released. Watch the trailers below.

Max Payne 3 coming later this year

One of my favorite game series, Max Payne, will be having a third part come out. In an article on March 23rd on GameSpy:

Rockstar Vancouver has today announced that it will release the third title in the well-received action franchise, entitled Max Payne 3 later this winter. Set to land on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, Rockstar has stated that the story will see Payne embroiled in a world of corruption, turmoil and intense violence.

I'm hoping they make this new game just as good and better than the second part which I enjoyed playing. Wow it's been a while since I've played those games.

G.I. Joe movie trailer

Another cartoon I use to watch all the time and loved as a kid was G.I. Joe, and the movie G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is coming out in theaters in August. Watch the short trailer below, it looks good.

Update on 3/29 @ 4:00 PM
Here's an old post on a site with pictures of some of the characters in the G.I. Joe movie.

Transformers 2 movie

Seeing movies being made from cartoons I use to watch as a youngster is cool. This isn't new news but Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen should be coming out in June this year. The trailer looks cool, watch it below.

You can find lots of the Transformers cartoon episodes on YouTube. Wow those bring back memories. You can follow more about the new Transformers movie on Transformers.MovieChronicles.com. If you scroll to the bottom of that site, you'll find links to other interesting upcoming movies.

Changes coming to Internet Explorer?

I found another interesting blog post on SitePoint.com posted last Thursday, named "Microsoft to drop Internet Explorer? No chance!" The blog post mentions that some rumors have been circulating that Microsoft would be giving up on Microsoft Internet Explorer. Of course it probably is false but I wouldn't be surprised if changes come to Internet Explorer, especially after hearig that in Windows 7, users have the option to not have IE8 installed. Read the SitePoint.com post and let me know your thoughts on the rumors.

Testing web sites with Microsoft SuperPreview

I found the blog post "Microsoft SuperPreview: a New Way to Test Websites" on SitePoint.com, and thought the tool sounded interesting.

Microsoft Expression Web SuperPreview allows developers to compare how a page is rendered in different browsers at the same time. The tool is a similar concept to Adobe Meermeer (reviewed by Josh Catone in December 2008), but SuperPreview can be used as a standalone application and a free version is available.

From the Microsoft Expression Web SuperPreview for Windows Internet Explorer page:

Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer is a stand-alone visual debugging tool that makes it faster and easier to migrate your sites from Internet Explorer 6 to Internet Explorer 7 or 8. With Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer, you can ensure that your Web sites work correctly in Internet Explorer 8 while also maintaining compatibility with earlier versions of Internet Explorer.

Expression Web SuperPreview for Internet Explorer shows your web pages rendered in Internet Explorer 6 and either Internet Explorer 7 or Internet Explorer 8, depending on which version you have installed on your machine. You can view the pages side by side or as an onion-skin overlay and use rulers, guides and zoom/pan tools to precisely identify differences in layout. You can even compare your page comp to how the targeted browsers render the page.

So it seems this is a way to test how your web site looks in IE6 if you have IE7 or IE8 installed on your PC. The SitePoint article says that it lets you compare how pages render in different browsers whereas the Microsoft page says it lets you compare how pages render in IE6 to whatever version of IE you have installed on your PC, so I'm assuming you can't test how the site would look in Firefox, Opera, Chrome, Safari, etc and compare to IE6. I haven't downloaded and tried this tool yet, but may in the near future. Has anyone downloaded this and tried it out? If so let us know if you can test non-Microsoft browsers.

New undo feature for Gmail

It's Friday and I have some things I wanted to blog about, since I haven't blogged much recently, I thought today was a good opportunity to blog about some findings I found interesting.

I use Gmail as a secondary email to Yahoo, but I read on the Gmail blog that there is a new feature for Gmail, the undo send. If you use Microsoft Outlook, then you probably know about recalling a message, well this is basically the same just for Gmail, but you'll only have five seconds to click the "Undo" link after you send an email to undo sending it, or it will be sent.

Turn on Undo Send in Gmail Labs under Settings, and you’ll see a new "Undo" link on every sent mail confirmation. Click "Undo," and we'll grab the message before it’s sent and take you right back to compose.

This feature can't pull back an email that's already gone; it just holds your message for five seconds so you have a chance to hit the panic button. And don't worry – if you close Gmail or your browser crashes in those few seconds, we'll still send your message.

Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 8

Today Microsoft released Internet Explorer 8 and also claiming that it is more secure against malware than the Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome browsers.

According to the report Microsoft released Thursday, based on research conducted by NSS Labs, IE8's Release Candidate 1 was 69 percent effective at catching malware before it did damage to a user's system. Mozilla Firefox 3.07 came in second with a 30 percent effectiveness rate, with Apple Safari's 3 in third place with a 24-percent rate and Google's Chrome 1.0.154 in fourth place with 16 percent effectiveness rate

NSS Labs said in the report that the data was collected from tests conducted in just over 12 days from Feb. 26 through March 10 in its labs in Austin, Texas. During the course of the test, the company said it monitored connectivity to ensure the browsers could access the live malware sites being tested, and performed 141 discrete tests. The margin of error of the tests was 3.76 percent, according to NSS Labs.

I have downloaded IE8 and I already like it over IE7. I will still use Mozilla Firefox as my main method of browsing the web, checking email, and doing my regular web based tasks. But being a web developer, I have to look into almost every web browser that is released.

If you have downloaded IE8 and used it, let me know your thoughts about it.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged game trailer

I just watched the trailer for the new video game coming out X-Men Origins: Wolverine Uncaged, which is based on the new movie coming out. I included the trailer below for you to watch. The graphics look good in the video and it looks like a fun action packed game. Hopefully it turns out good as some "movie games" don't turn out good.

Be careful on social networking sites

Next time going on a social networking site such as Facebook or MySpace be careful what you click on. There is a new variant of the Koobface worm and it is running wild on Facebook, installing malware on the computers of victims who click on a link to a fake YouTube video. Below is a part of this article on Yahoo Tech News.

The Koobface worm is dangerous. It can be dropped by other malware and downloaded unknowingly by a user when visiting malicious Web sites, Trend Micro reports. When attackers execute the malware, it searches for cookies created by online social networks. The latest variant is targeting Facebook, but earlier variants have also plagued MySpace.

Once Koobface finds the social-networking cookies, it makes a DNS query to check IP addresses that correspond to remote domains. Trend Micro explains that those servers can send and receive information about the affected machine. Once connected, the malicious user can remotely perform commands on the victim's machine.

"Once cookies related to the monitored social-networking Web sites are located, it connects to these Web sites using the user log-in session stored in the cookies. It then navigates through pages to search for the user's friends. If a friend has been located, it sends an HTTP POST request to the server," Trend Micro reports.

Ultimately, the worm's agenda is to transform the victim's computer into a zombie and form botnets for malicious purposes. Koobface attempts to do this by composing a message and sending it to the user's friends. The message contains a link to a Web site where a copy of the worm can be downloaded by unsuspecting friends. And the cycle repeats itself.

Microsoft Web Platform

I've heard about this recently and thought I would share on here in case others didn't know about it. Microsoft released a platform for Windows users to design, develop, and deliver web based applications named Microsoft Web Platform.

The Web Platform Installer (Web PI) is a simple tool that installs Microsoft's entire Web Platform, including IIS, Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition, SQL Server 2008 Express Edition and the .NET Framework. Using the Web Platform Installer’s user interface, you can choose to install either specific products or the entire Microsoft Web Platform onto your computer. The Web PI also helps keep your products up to date by always offering the latest additions to the Web Platform.

New Sims 3 trailer video

Here's a new video trailer of Sims 3 showing how now they are going to give Sims different personalities. Looks interesting as it will add more ways to customize your Sim. A part from an article on GameSpy:

Rodiek assures me, though, that Sims 3 isn't about monitoring your Sims' status. Just like in real life, the key to the Sims 3 is more about maintaining a level of overall fulfillment with your life than it is about having a place where you could reliably urinate. I believe him. The "needs" bars are still there, but they're buried under the game's (quite granular) interface. And while your Sims can still languish or even die if you don't attend to their needs, Rodiek insists that it's generally easier to ensure they'll thrive.

It's all about "moodlets," evidently. Think of them as temporary "buffs" that are triggered when you perform certain actions or inhabit specific spaces. When you brush your teeth, you'll get "Minty Breath," which is wholly positive; conversely, if you behave inappropriately toward another Sim in conversation, you might trigger "Creeped Out". Each moodlet corresponds to a specific need, and from what I gleaned watching the demo, their effects persist for a few hours.

Nate Robinson's amazing dunk

If you haven't seen the incredible Nate Robinson dunk in the NBA All Star Dunk contest where have you been? :) This is just an amazing dunk to see. Robinson is listed as 5'9" tall and he jumps over 6'11" Dwight Howard.
