APB: Reloaded reviewed by GameSpy

One of the games I want to try whenever I get a new better computer is APB: Reloaded. GameSpy had a review recently on the game and what I take from it is that APB: Reloaded is not the best game but it's free to play and if you're into free roaming cities with action and driving and teamwork then give it a try.

Where to begin? APB's missions lack variety and feature the narrative depth of a mud puddle. Playing as an Enforcer (the "cop" faction), I didn't feel like a pissed-off citizen driven to become a vigilante in a city run ragged by criminals. I felt like a player with a green name shooting at a player with a red name for no other reason than the color difference. Worse, I never felt like I was "raiding a drug den" or "securing evidence" as the brief mission description paragraph of text tried to lead me to believe. I felt like I was going to point A on my map to press F on an objective before going to point B to repeat.

...

As for gunplay being unbalanced, sniper rifles, in particular, should be labeled "death dealers." Because there is no locational damage, you can land a shot anywhere on your target with a sniper rifle and instantly sap half your enemy's life. Two shots equals death. Because they are so accurate, powerful, quick to aim, and effective at long range, facing a foe using a sniper rifle is like playing against a hacker using Aimbot.

...

I earned a ton of in-game cash by completing objectives (which come rapid fire), and at no time did I feel like I had to plunk down my Visa to even the playing field. I'm happy to report APB: Reloaded has avoided the pay-to-win trap.

The Walking Dead Season 2 episode 7

Sunday night had the mid-season finale of season 2 of The Walking Dead and wow what an ending. The episode was named "Pretty Much Dead Already" and we finally get to see what happened to Sophia. *Spoiler alert* Do not read on if you have not watched the mid-season finale yet.

Here's a quick summary of what happened in the episode. Glenn tells the group that the barn is full of walkers. They check out the barn and Shane wants to kill all of the walkers, but Rick wants to talk with Hershel first before clearing the barn. The group has an argument about staying or leaving the farm.

Dale tries to warn Andrea about Shane but she doesn't listen and tends to agree with the way Shane is handling things. Rick tries to talk with Hershel but Hershel wants them to leave the farm by the end of the week. Rick tells Shane that Lori is pregnant and Shane tells Rick that they need their guns.

Shane talks with Lori about her being pregnant and Lori makes it clear that the baby will never be his, even if it really is. Shane walks off as that seemed to really upset him. After talking with Carl, Shane tries to find the guns in the RV but Dale has taken them to try and hide or get rid of them (I don't get this myself, maybe Dale thinks he's protecting the group from Shane as he is losing it). Shane finds Dale in the swamp and demands his guns back. Dale puts his rifle up saying that he will shoot Shane. Shane steps right up against the rifle and Dale can't shoot him. Dale says, "This world, this is where you belong."

Hershel asks Rick to help him and Jimmy with something. They go into the swamp and find two walkers stuck in mud. They use those animal rescue neck grabbing poles to lead them to the farm.

Shane brings back the guns to the farm house and starts handing them out, wanting everyone to join him take care of the walkers in the barn. T-Dog and the others see Rick and Hershel with the two walkers as they try to bring them to the barn. The group runs out to the barn and Shane is pissed off and losing it. He kills the walker that Hershel had restrained and then opens up the barn door. Shane, Andrea, T-Dog, Daryl and finally Glenn line up and shoot the walkers that come out of the barn. Shane also shoots the walker that Rick had restrained.

After they finish shooting all of the walkers that came out of the barn, one more slowly steps out, and it's Sophia. Sophia is now a walker. Carol runs toward Sophia but Daryl grabs her and they fall to the ground as she cries. Rick steps forward and shoots Sophia. And that is how the finale ends.

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 6

Episode 6, "Secrets" of season 2 of The Walking Dead on Sunday night was a good one that leaves us viewers hanging and having to wait until next week's "mid-season finale" to find out what happens next. And yes, next week's episode is the last one for a while. I don't know when the show will return but I'm going to guess in January maybe? Update: Someone's comment on the site said the show will return February 12th. That is a long time from now until then.

So here's the quick recap of episode 6. *Spoiler alert*

Patricia brings chickens to the barn to feed them to the walkers that are being kept in there. The group goes to practice shooting a gun, even Carl is practicing, after getting caught taking a hand gun from the van. Dale and Glenn stay behind and Glenn tells Dale that the barn is full of walkers and Lori is pregnant. Dale talks with Hershel about the walkers in the barn. Hershel think that the walkers are still people, which includes his wife and step-son.

Shane tries to teach Andrea how to shoot under pressure but goes too far by bringing up her dead sister Amy. Shane and Andrea then go look for Sophia in a deserted-looking residential neighborhood. Dale talks with Lori about her pregnancy. Maggie and Glenn go to the town pharmacy again trying to find some things Lori wanted. Maggie is grabbed by a walker and Glenn saves her. Maggie and Glenn return and Maggie is upset at Lori because they almost died getting Lori "morning after" pills.

Shane and Lori don't find Sophia and find themselves getting surrounded by walkers. They shoot and kill some, Andrea looks like she's a natural now, and they get in the car and drive off. On the drive back, Shane and Andrea stop and get busy. Lori takes the pills but then makes herself throw them up. Shane and Andrea return to the farmhouse and Dale sees them look at each other. Dale confronts Shane alone and says that he thinks he should leave. He says he's looking out for the group and he knows something happened with Otis and he remembered seeing Shane aiming his gun at Rick back in Atlanta, and says, "I know what kind of man you are." Shane replies by saying Rick is his best friend and basically says if you think I could shoot my best friend then what do you think I could do to someone I don't like who is throwing accusations at me. Shane gives Dale a scary look and smirk. Dale looks a little worried and gives the look like "wow Shane really is crazy."

Rick finds the morning after packets, finds Lori and they talk about it. During their talk Rick asks if there is anything else he should know and she says "Shane and I" and pauses. Rick says, "I know. You thought I was dead, right?" Lori nods and cries.

Recap video
So now all of the secrets are out and in next week's episode it looks like Shane is trying to take charge and wants to take out the walkers in the barn. Next week's episode should be good, as it's the mid-season finale, so will the group be forced to leave the farm? Will they finally find Sophia?

Max Payne 3 mechanics and features

The upcoming new Max Payne 3 game looks really good and here's a video I found online where they talk about the mechanics of the game and some of the features. I'm always interested in how video games are made. The video has some graphic footage so don't watch if you're under 18. The game is scheduled to be released in March 2012.

The video above is the first one in Rockstar's new Design and Technology series, which takes a behind-the-scenes look at the mechanics of how its top tier games are made. The video explains some of the gameplay features such as motion capture, enemy A.I. and the trademark bullet time effects. It is a Rockstar-produced video so the content is a little self-congratulatory but the video does do a great job of showcasing some new in-game footage with a glimpse of how the sausage was made.

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 5

Episode 5, "Chupacabra" of season 2 of The Walking Dead was on Sunday night and I found it to be another slow episode until the end of course. So here's the quick recap of episode 5. *Spoiler alert*

The episode starts out showing a flashback of the start of the zombie apocalypse with human survivors, where Shane, Lori, Carl, Carol, Sophia and the abusive husband Ed all stuck on the highway in a car jam. Shane and Lori walk up the road to try and see what's going on. They see military helicopters bombing the city.

It comes back to the present. Some of the survivors head out in 2-person groups still searching for Sophia. Rick and Shane are one small group and along their search they talk. Shane wants to stop searching and leave while Rick wants to find Sophia.

Daryl searches on his own while riding a horse. He finds Sophia's doll but not Sophia. As he moves on, a snake scares the horse and it throws Daryl off and into a ravine. One of his arrows goes straight through his side. He gets up and tries climbing toward a ridge but slips and falls. Daryl has a dream or something with his brother, Merle, talking to him, mostly mocking him and trying to turn him against the group. It could be Merle's spirit or something if Merle did die or it could just be Daryl's own mind talking to himself using Merle's image. Daryl wakes up to find a walker trying to bite his boots. Daryl kills the two zombies and then a squirrel for food.

Daryl climbs the ravine again and reaches the top. During his climb, Merle appears again and talks more to him. Daryl finally reaches the top. He finds his way back to the farmhouse coming from the forest. Andrea spots him with a rifle and alerts the group it's a walker as Daryl is limping, dirty and has blood on him. Rick tells Andrea not to shoot. Rick, Shane, T-Dog and Glenn run towards Daryl thinking he's a walker. When they reach him they realize it's Daryl and not a walker. For whatever reason Andrea shoots and the bullet grazes the side of Daryl's head. Hershel helps patch up Daryl.

They have a dinner all together. Maggie and Glenn exchange notes on a piece of paper while at the "kids table." They want to meet up again. After dinner Maggie reads the note and Glenn said to meet in the barn. Glenn climbs up into the barn and finds that the lower part of the barn is full of walkers. Maggie runs to the barn and meets Glenn at the window where he got in as he's trying to get out as fast as possible. Maggie says, "You weren't supposed to see this."

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 4

Episode 4 "Cherokee Rose" of season 2 of The Walking Dead was on Sunday night and it was rather a slow episode. **Spoiler alert!** Do not read on if you haven't watched it yet.

In this episode, the survivors from the highway join the others at the farm house. They have a funeral service for Otis and Shane is asked to speak on his last moments. Here's where Shane's story could get messy. Shane says that he and Otis were both down to pistols, he says that Otis gave him his bag and told him to go on and he'll cover the rear. Shane then says he looked back and Otis was killed. Cover the rear? Rear of what? Cover him? With one bullet?

Lori tells Shane she wants him to stay. Hershel wants Rick and his crew to leave once his son is better. Before Glenn and Maggie leave to go to the pharmacy, Lori writes down something for him to get for her, a pregnancy test. Dale and T-Dog go to get some water from the well but they find a walker down in the well. Others from the group come to see and they decide to try and pull the walker out so it doesn't further infect the water. The water was being used by the farm animals right? They try and bait the walker with canned ham but it doesn't respond to it. So Glenn goes down and he is almost dropped down, but somehow manages to get the rope around the walker's neck. Glenn is brought back up and then they pull up the walker. But the walker tears in half and his lower half falls down into the well. T-Dog then kills the upper part of it.

Hershel and Rick have a chat about God. Daryl goes looking for Sophia and does not find her still. He finds a house with a recently opened can of sardines and a blanket and pillow. On the highway they leave a note and food for Sophia in case she returns there. Glenn and Maggie get closer in the pharmacy. Rick puts his badge in a drawer, maybe realizing he isn't a police officer anymore in this world. Lori goes outside and takes the pregnancy test and it's positive. She looks upset and we have to ask who's the father?

Half-Life 2 mod: No More Room in Hell

A new Half-Life 2 mod is in beta, named No More Room in Hell which is a zombie survival game. The game play looks ok, I might try and check it out if I get some free time. Has anyone played this? If you have leave a comment and let us know what you think about it.

The Half-Life 2 mod is a multiplayer focused zombie survival game powered by Valve's Source engine, and there will no doubt be comparisons to Left 4 Dead. But this is a zombie survival game, not so much a zombie shooter like L4D and L4D2.

Grand Theft Auto V video trailer

A new Grand Theft Auto game is in the works, Grand Theft Auto V, and below is the trailer for it. The graphics look great in the video. The basic idea of the story, as far as the voice talking during the trailer, seems to be a guy trying to get away from doing bad things and wanting to "settle down" but it looks like you'll be doing some bad things in the game. I haven't heard what the actual story details of the game yet but I'll post them when I do. The game will have a Los Santos/Los Angeles setting and it will have online multi-player feature.

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 3

Episode 3, "Save the Last One" of season 2 of The Walking Dead was on Sunday night and wow what an episode. That was the best episode so far in season 2. Spoiler alert! Do not read on if you haven't watched it yet.

In Sunday's episode it starts with Shane in the shower staring at himself in a dark kind of scary manner. I too thought I missed something as in the last episode Shane was inside the school with Otis, but it's just a look ahead as it goes back to the current time showing Shane and Otis running through the school away from walkers.

Carol is crying in the RV about Sophia still missing and no one can sleep so Daryl and Andrea decide to go look for Sophia at night which doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do.

Shane and Otis are trapped atop the gymnasium's bleachers with walkers below. They make a plan where Otis will run through the locker room to get the walkers to follow him which will let Shane escape through a window, which is 20 feet above the ground. The plan works but Shane hurts his ankle from the drop.

Glenn and T-Dog get to the farmhouse where Rick and Lori are at with Carl. T-Dog gets some medical help for his infected cut. Lori talks with Rick that it may be better for Carl to die rather than live in this new world.

Otis finds Shane and saves his life. Both guys appear out of breath, tired and hurt. They try to get away as walkers follow them.

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 2

Spoiler alert! Do not read on if you haven't seen the episode yet. Episode 2 of season 2 of AMC's The Walking Dead was on Sunday night and the main focus was on Rick's son Carl, who got shot, as Rick carries him to a farm house where a family is surviving to try and get medical help. They need medical supplies and equipment to remove the pieces of the bullet so Shane and Otis, the guy who shot Carl, go to a walker-infested high school where there's a medical trailer. They use flares to distract the walkers, throwing them in the other direction of the trailer. It works as the walkers turn and walk towards them.

After getting the medical supplies they head out and they unintentionally get the walkers' attention. Shane and Otis run for it and end up breaking into the school and closing a gate before the walkers can get in. They show a piece that is holding the gate closed for now but it looks like at any second the gate is going to open. So now they're stuck in the school while Carl isn't doing good. The others who were searching for Sophia still haven't found her and decide to stay another night at the highway in case she comes back.

The Walking Dead season 2 episode 1

Sunday night had the first episode of season 2 of AMC's The Walking Dead and I thought it was good. If you watched it too let me know what you thought.

*Spoiler alert: don't read on if you haven't watched it yet. Here's a quick summary of the episode. The group decided to leave Atlanta for Fort Benning. They eventually have to stop because the highway is blocked by cars. A hoard of walkers/zombies come by and causes some trouble as the group tries to hide underneath cars. The little girl Sophia is chased by two walkers and Rick goes after her. Eventually Sophia goes missing and the group searches for her. Shane is planning on leaving the group and going on his own. The end of the episode has Rick's son Carl walking slowly near a deer and then a gunshot is heard and the deer and Carl fall to the ground. Rick and Shane run to Carl and the episode ends. If you missed Sunday's episode you can watch the highlights on The Walking Dead site.

So no one from the group died but T-Dog cut his arm pretty bad, Sophia goes missing and Carl is shot. There were some parts that had me shaking my head asking why the characters were doing some of these things, as some others have pointed out on the internet. First, they choose to drive on the highway and they ran into a roadblock of cars. The characters get out of their vehicles and look around without much fear it seems and they even let the kids out and about. They don't notice the horde of zombies coming their way until they're really close. And weren't the zombies coming from the direction that they came from? If so, they would have drive by the horde and known that they were coming in that direction too. When T-Dog cut his arm, wouldn't the zombies be able to smell fresh blood and find him under the dead body that the other guy put on top of him to hide him from the zombies?

Recap video
Below is a preview video of next week's episode.

Today the trailer for the new upcoming Amazing Spider-Man movie was released online. Watch it below.

I'm not sure why they're rebooting this movie. I've read some say that they're trying to make it more accurate to the comic books than the previous movies. The last part of the trailer is in a first-person CGI kind of view and it doesn't look realistic at all. It looked more like a video game. Hopefully that is not in the actual movie.

If you watched the trailer what do you think of this upcoming movie?

TNT Falling Skies episode 1

Tonight I watched TNT's new series Falling Skies and I found it interesting and it reminded me of AMC's The Walking Dead series. The Walking Dead series has zombies that have taken over the area where the main characters are whereas in Falling Skies, aliens have taken over Earth and humans fight for food and staying alive.

Warning spoiler alert, don't read anymore if you haven't watched the show yet and want to see it. Just as The Walking Dead showed that at times humans can be the biggest threat to other humans, Falling Skies showed that same thing tonight as a hostile group took hostage a few people that were looking for ammunition. That hostile group also had some racists just like The Walking Dead had in their first episode which was clearly shown.

I will definitely watch the next Falling Skies episode and I will probably watch every week if I'm able to because I like action movies/shows and alien type of movies but I felt like I knew what was going to happen in this episode tonight. I have a feeling it will be similar to The Walking Dead and focus on people's relationships and how they handle a situation like what they're in but we will see as the episodes move along.

If you watched Falling Skies tonight let me know what you thought of it. If you haven't seen it yet check out the official web site and the TNT Falling Skies page.

Movie blogging: Jumping the Broom

Tonight I went to the movies with my wife and some family members to see the new Jumping the Broom movie and I really enjoyed it. It's a good couple movie for those married and those engaged and on their way to getting married. Like most family movies there is drama in the movie but it wasn't over the top. Anyways I recommend this movie for other couples to see together.

The movie had a lot of funny moments but I thought the funniest part was when Mike Epps says his "Hannah Montana and Akon" line near the end. That part had everyone in the theater rolling. If you've seen the movie then you know what I'm talking about.

If you haven't seen the trailer yet for Jumping the Broom you can watch it below.

Mozilla releases Firefox 4

With Internet Explorer 9 being released last week, yesterday Mozilla released Firefox 4. I downloaded it and the interface looks a little different from the previous version.

The browser boasts a number of improvements over past iterations, including a new look and feel, and increased privacy and security features. One security upgrade, "Do Not Track," will allow "users to set a browser preference that will broadcast their desire to opt-out of third party, advertising-based tracking," Mozilla said.

The new Firefox also promotes interactive capabilities with HTML5, a Web programming language that provides full interaction without the need of external plug-ins like Adobe Flash and Microsoft Silverlight.

...

The new browser had been downloaded nearly three million times hours after it was made available online. Microsoft's Internet Explorer 9 was downloaded 2.35 million times within the first 24 hours of its availability last week.

The Walking Dead video game details

Some details have been released about the upcoming The Walking Dead video game.

Set for a release this Fall to coincide with the return of the TV series for its second season, Telltale Games, best known for adventure games like Sam & Max and the recent Back to the Future, will soon release The Walking Dead as an episodic game, running multi-platform. In an interesting twist, the game will actually adhere to the canon of the comic series, rather than the acclaimed TV series on which it's tentpolled. While no substantive details have been released about the game, Kirkman does make some promises about where it's heading. Hint: It will involve a lot of gory messes.

According to Kirkman:

"With the episodic nature of how they make the game, they can make a level and release a level, then make another level and release that level, so the game should come out in pretty rapid succession because of that."

Adding: "You'll be playing as characters from The Walking Dead for sure, and different levels you'll play as different people, so we'll see."

A fifth Resident Evil movie will be coming

A new Resident Evil 5 movie will be coming out on September 14, 2012, in 3D, while no name yet has been given for it.

There's good reason for the hastened production schedule for yet another sequel. According to Box Office Mojo, last year's Resident Evil film, Afterlife, was the highest grossing in the series, generating over $236 million, which is "about as much as the first three movies combined," the site notes. Afterlife enjoyed success in international markets and generated additional revenue through its 3D presentations. According to the report, about 80 percent of Afterlife's domestic revenue came from its extra-dimensional screenings.

Players will assume the role of a Marine fighting against a worldwide alien invasion that has the city of Los Angeles as the major battleground and focal point for the game. Players will battle unique and varied enemies, using an arsenal of weapons throughout the game like an assault rifle, sniper rifle, rocket launcher, frag grenades, and a turret gun as they navigate the streets of Los Angeles avoiding fierce and relentless attacks. Aside from high-caliber fire fighting combat, destructible environments have been included using the Havok Destruction Module, which will allow players to destroy scaffolding structures, vehicles and overpasses to eliminate enemy forces.

I mentioned in a previous post that there was a rumor that the The Walking Dead TV series would get a video game after it, and yes it is true and it won't be just one and done. Make sure to check out the full article as they also interview Robert Kirkman.

A video game was inevitable, and Telltale Games is happy to answer the call. Today, the developers behind adventure games such as Back to the Future and Sam & Max announced that it has entered into a "multi-year, multi-platform, multi-title" Walking Dead partnership with Robert Kirkman, creator of the franchise. Specific platforms for the project weren't announced, but the agreement covers PC, Mac, consoles, handhelds, mobile and social gaming media. Telltale is looking at a fourth quarter 2011 release.

Among them, says the invitation, is "one based on a just-launched property from the TV and comic book world whose popularity is changing life as some know it."

The Walking Dead television show, based on the Image Comics series, launched on AMC last October, fitting the vague description admirably. Admittedly we have no actual evidence to support this theory, though the series -- which often focuses on human interactions over zombie killing -- fits Telltale's style of games rather well.

It would be really interesting if there was a game based on the TV series as it would probably focus more on the human interaction than the zombie killing as most zombie survival games are about.

Researchers want to bring back the mammoth

After reading the Researchers aim to resurrect mammoth in five years article on Yahoo, all I can say is "why? why? why?" I don't see how any good can come from this. It's just humans again trying to play God. If it is a success and they're able to somehow bring back the mammoth species, what's next with them? Can they even survive with the temperatures on Earth now?

Adding a Tweet button on your site

You've probably seen those Twitter "Tweet" buttons on web sites everywhere now on the web. Do you want to add one to your web site? Well it's pretty easy to add to your site, here's what you do:
  • Go to the Twitter Tweet button page
  • Choose the button you want to display on your site
  • You can also change the "Tweet text", "URL", and "Language" but I think most will keep the defaults selected for those extra options
  • You can then recommend people to follow someone on Twitter, so if you have a Twitter account you should put your Twitter account name in that field
  • It will show you a preview, if you like what you see, copy the code it gives you and paste it into your site's code and that's it!

APB Reloaded beta coming in February

The free-to-play shooter APB Reloaded game, that I mentioned in a previous post, will be released in a beta period at the end of February. Next week gamers can sign up for the beta. This info was found on Gamespot. I think I'm going to try this since it'll be free and see how it goes. Hopefully it doesn't take up too much hard disk space.

New movie trailer: Super 8

Another good looking movie coming out in 2011 is Super 8. From watching the trailer, we can assume that something is being carried from Area 51 in one of the train cars. Someone drives onto the tracks and directly at the oncoming train. Either they're committing suicide or trying to stop the train from reaching its destination. Whatever is in the train car, it's big and strong as it smashes the train car's door open to get out. We don't get any visuals of the "monster" so we'll have to wait and see. This movie is being produced by Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams. It was written and directed by J.J. Abrams.

New movie trailer: Battle Los Angeles

A new movie coming out this year is Battle Los Angeles and from the trailer it looks ineresting and worth seeing. The movie is an alien invasion type of movie and the aliens, from the limited shots in the trailers, appear to be somewhat robotic. The movie comes to theaters on March 11th.
